The JIM COUCH FOUNDATION is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit basketball empowerment organization that started in 1956 in the Inwood section of Manhattan. Mr. Jim Couch was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's first coach and taught him the sky hook before he entered Power Memorial HS in 1962. Throughout the years, the organization has provided free basketball opportunity through open gyms and tournament play in New York City and over 3oo at-risk youth have earned scholarship opportunities. Mr. Couch been honored by the President of the United States, the Governor of New York State, and the Mayor of New York City. In 2011, the Foundation started the Super 16 National Freshman Game as a way to acknowledge Mr. Couch's basketball innovation and focus. The showcase featured 8 of the top fifty nationally-ranked freshman in the United States and discovered 6-9 Thomas Bryant from Bishop Kearney HS in Rochester, NY, currently a top twenty prospect on many recruiting sites after being unranked before the game.
